Youth Minecraft Urban Design Challenge!

Calling all future Urban Designers, Architects, Engineers, Designers, Artists, Ecologists, and Landscape Architects! Do you love Minecraft? Do you love urban design? As part of a BioDesign Studio and WWU Urban Planning Internship, we seek youth participants (under the age of 18) to share your vision for the Bellingham Waterfront.

You can submit a screenshot of your design to parkk9@wwu.edu to win a prize* in the following categories:

  • Greenest Design

  • Most Futuristic Design

  • Healthiest Design

  • Most Adventurous Design

In your email submission, make sure to include a subject heading stating the Minecraft and the category you are entering (example. Minecraft: Greenest Design)


Prizes: $10 gift certificates to Mallard Ice Cream

Submit your entry by August 14th, 2022.

 

To Participate - Step #1 - Download a Minecraft World

There are two ways to download the Minecraft Bellingham Waterfront World:

Minecraft Educational Download Instructions

If you don't have Minecraft Education downloaded, you can sign up for free with a school email address: Download Minecraft Education (Free for students)

  • Then download the Bellingham Waterfront files (listed above).

  • Save the downloaded file somewhere easy to remember on your computer, such as your Desktop.

  • Launch Minecraft Education Edition and, if prompted, sign in using your school email account and password.

  • Once Minecraft has loaded in, press Play

  • On the Minecraft home page, Press Import

  • Find the Bellingham_Waterfront_Edu (.mcworld file) you downloaded and press Open.

  • Press View My Worlds

  • Press Bellingham Waterfront

  • Press Play

  • Once you are finished with your world, take a screenshot and email us at parkk9@wwu.edu to enter the community contest.

 

Download Minecraft Java Version

Instructions for opening Minecraft worlds in Java Edition. (We assume you have already downloaded Minecraft, if not, here is a link (it requires a paid subscription).


For Windows:

  • Download the Bellingham_Waterftont_Java file (listed above) and save it to an easily accessible place

  • Right-click on the Bellingham_Waterfront_Java file and press Extract All

  • A pop-up window will appear; click Browse

  • In the file finder, click on Desktop and press Select Folder

  • Type [windows key] + R

  • In the text box, type %appdata% and then click OK

  • Click on the folder titled .minecraft

  • Click on the folder titled saves

  • If you cannot find a saves folder:

    • Launch Minecraft, then log in

    • Press Play

    • When at the title screen, press Singleplayer

    • Press Create New World

    • At the bottom of the screen, press Create New World again

    • Once you have loaded into a world, press escape(ESC) on your keyboard

    • Press Save and Quit to Title

    • Press Quit Game

    • You should now have a saves folder where there wasn't one before

Continue with the instructions below

  • Left-click and drag your extracted desktop folder into minecraft's saves folder

  • Launch Minecraft, then log in

  • Press Play

  • When at the title screen, press Singleplayer

  • Click on the newly added minecraft world and press Play Selected World

  • Once you are finished with your world, take a screenshot and email us at parkk9@wwu.edu to enter the community contest.

For Mac:

  • Download the Bellingham_Waterfront_Java file and save it to an easily accessible place

  • Launch Minecraft, then log in

  • Click on Options

  • Click on Resource Packs

  • Click on Open Pack Folder

  • On the file finder that opens up, at the top of the view pane, is your taskbar. Find the button that resembles a rectangle split in four and click it

  • Three panes will appear. In the middle pane, scroll down and find the saves folder. Click on it

  • If you cannot find a saves folder:

    • Launch Minecraft, then log in

    • Press Play

    • When at the title screen, press Singleplayer

    • Press Create New World

    • At the bottom of the screen, press Create New World again

    • Once you have loaded into a world, press escape(ESC) on your keyboard

    • Press Save and Quit to Title

    • Press Quit Game

    • You should now have a saves folder where there wasn't one before

  • Continue with the instructions below

    • Click and drag the Bellingham_Waterfront_Java file into the saves folder

    • Go back to the Minecraft Launcher and press Play

    • When at the title screen, press Singleplayer

    • Click on the newly added Minecraft world and press Play Selected World

    • Once you are finished with your world, take a screenshot and email us at parkk9@wwu.edu to enter the community contest.
